Functions of the Directorate

The following are the main functions for the Directorate: 1. Develop Information Systems for the Rwanda National Police 2. Train police personnel on the basics of information technology in collaboration with the training directorate 3. Develop the network infrastructure on information technology systems in the Rwanda National Police (Network between different police units) 4. Manage software used in the Rwanda National Police 5. Maintain radio communication in the Rwanda National Police 6. Manage Transmission Centers based in different police units 7. Install and maintain communication equipment

ICT Directorate striving to achieve efficiency

In 2000 when the Rwanda National Police was launched, it was given a Directorate of Information and Communication to help keep the force’s communication functions coherent.

It was then under the operations department with specific emphasis on radio communication.

At the moment, the directorate emphasizes the management of ICT facilities in line with modern ICT trends that include that include a modern computing environment, radio communication and mobile telephony.

The computing environment focuses on software applications that help in the day to day tasks. The overall objective is to ensure efficiency and effectiveness in the Police force.

The force has developed a website through which it is able to give the public to give to the public police r elated news and access to some services.

Radio communication on the other part helps better communication between police officers.

The emergency call center facility (112) handles emergency calls, on-top of coordinating frontline staff under emergency situations.

The directorate has 137 members of staff with up to 83 working as front-line staff in radio communication. Among these are two officers at each of the nine repeaters who work as radio controllers, two at each of the thirty district headquarters and an officer at each of the five regional police headquarters.

There are 55 staff deployed at the RNP headquarters under the following services:

Communications Services, Software and Systems Services, Networking Services, Technical Support Services and Training Services.
