Canine Brigade

Background

The Unit was created in the year 2000 with 02 dogs donated by the government of Austria who also trained 02 dog handlers for the new Unit. Since then we have been improving our strategic operations by doing the following:

We purchased more dogs and carried out training for the dogs and their handlers, we are currently able to detect explosives in a bid to fight and counter Terrorism using police dogs we can also fight drugs of abuse by using drug sniffer dogs, now we have the capacity to track down offenders.

CAPACITY BUILDING

Training: we have been able to train (12) twelve dog handlers in drugs, identification and detection. We also sent 02 dogs handlers to Sudan for 02 months course in explosive detection and identification. Currently we have 02 Kenyan trainers specializing in tracking, scent discrimination and explosives detection. The Unit at the moment has 12 dogs doing different types of work in the fight against crime. The acquisition of more dogs and training will continue to develop in order to reduce crime by Using Police dogs.

STORIES
We have been able to apprehend offenders using police dogs, the amount of drugs seized confirms this, some of the drugs captured include, Cocaine, Marijuana and a local drug called mugo. Most of the drugs seized were found in slums such as Biryogo and Remera. Most of the traffickers both local and foreign were handed over to relevant authorities for prosecution, where as the seized drugs were destroyed

FUTURE PLANS
We intend to have enough dogs and personnel in order to deploy in all the 69 Police Stations countrywide. The unit Head Quarters and Kennels are currently under construction and will be ready soon. We are planning to deploy dogs on our boarder posts which we suspect are used by drug traffickers. In order to achieve the above strategic objectives we shall embark on breeding of dogs so as to reduce the money spent on purchasing them, in conclusion, we shall organize advanced courses for our dog handlers in order to improve their capacity in dealing with the crime trend.
