As part of the ongoing campaign to sensitize the youth to abstain from drug and alcohol abuse, Rwanda National Police (RNP) has embarked on an anti- drug campaign to sensitizing the youth to abstain from drug and alcohol abuse.  On Friday Police visited Ecole Française high school in Nyarugenge district to educate students on the danger caused by substance abuse.

Addressing students at school, Chief Superintendent Damas Gatare, the director of Community Policing at RNP made an elaborate presentation on the negative psychological effects that drugs and alcohol have on their lives.

He stressed that substance abuse not only affects their health but also on their social lives. “Drug and alcohol abuse lead to health complications, social desperation, school drop outs, idleness, unwanted pregnancies, sexually transmitted diseases and other psycho-social complications that make the lives of youths completely live hopeless,” He told the students.

Gatare explained how drugs are supplied through drug dealers who get them from neighboring countries. He noted that there were no narcotics being grown or produced Rwanda. He urged them not to consume drugs to avoid being addicted.

The director of Community Policing also informed students that Police has put in place strong mechanisms to curb the expansion of drug importing. Subsequent measures have been taken to secure the country’s borders. Concerning consumption and trading he urged the students to be part of the fight as they are the future strength and hope for the country.
