Police warns against self-administered justice
Police has cautioned members of public against taking justice into their own hands against suspected wrongdoers.
Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Andre Hakizimana, the Southern region police spokesperson, while reacting to a recent case where people allegedly beat up a suspected thief in Mbazi Sector of Nyamagabe District, said that such actions are contrary to article 140 0f the law.
CIP Hakizimana said that two people have since been arrested in connection with the alleged self administered justice over manslaughter after the victim succumbed to injuries.
“Mob justice is strongly prohibited in Rwanda and punishable by the law,” he said.
“If you are wronged, and fortunate enough you catch the suspected criminal or happen to know the offender, you should call the nearby police. There is also DASSO which supplement administrative activities related to security. Any attempt to take matters into your own hands...is an offence and you will labeled are suspect, and you will face the law for your illegal actions.”
