Over 7100 pieces of polythene bags seized

Separate Police operations conducted Sunday in Gakenke and Huye districts seized over 7164 pieces of banned polythene bags.

The banned non-biodegradable plastic bags were seized from two traffickers, who were also taken into custody.

One of the suspects identified as Justin Niyomugabo, 23, was arrested in Musange village, Mpare cell of Tumba sector in Huye district with 35 cartons of (7000 pieces) polythene bags.

“Besides trafficking and selling banned plastic bags, Niyomugabo was at the time violating governmental directive to prevent the spread of Coronavirus after he was found selling alcoholic drinks in his shop, where the polythene bags were recovered,” Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Sylvestre Twajamahoro, the Police spokesperson for the Southern region, said.

Another suspect, Pierre Mbabariye, 32, was arrested in Gashenyi Sector of Gakenke District with 164 pieces of polythene bags.

In separate operations conducted recently, Police about 101, 830 pieces of banned non-biodegradable plastic bags in Musanze, Gisagara and Nyamagabe districts, 

Under article 10 of law N° 17/2019 of 10/08/2019, any person, who imports plastic carry bags and single-use plastic items, is liable to the dispossession of those plastic carry bags and such items, and to an administrative fine equivalent to ten times of the value of those plastic carry bags and single-use plastic items.

In article 12, a retailer of plastic carry bags and single-use plastic items is liable to an administrative fine of Rwf300, 000 and dispossession of those plastic carry bags and such items.
