Police in Rubavu District intercepted a drug trafficker on Friday with over 3000 pellets of cannabis.
Bosco Kwizera, 30, was intercepted in Nyundo Sector, Terimbere Cell, Keya Village with the bundle of the narcotics.
His arrest followed information provided by cyclists' security personnel in Rubavu, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Bonaventure Twizere Karekezi, the Police spokesperson for the Western region, said.
"The security personnel for the cyclists in Gisenyi town got suspicious and called the Police after they saw Kwizera transporting a concealed luggage on a bicycle," said CIP Karekezi.
"Police in Gisenyi town located Kwizera, on checking the luggage they indeed realised the bundle contained 3000 pellets of cannabis. He was immediately taken into custody and handed over to RIB at Mukamira station alongside the exhibits," he added.
Kwizera said that he was paid Rwf150, 000 upfront to traffic the narcotics from Rubavu to Kamonyi District, where he would meet the rightful owner.
He explained that he used to cross to Goma in DR Congo to buy shoes. It is here that he met another man, whom he declined to name, who introduced him to the criminal business.
According to Kwizera, it's this unnamed man that told him where he would pick the bundle of cannabis in a place called 'mu makoro' in Gisenyi town and find a way to traffic it to Kamonyi where he would meet the owner.
The rightful owner had bought the narcotics from the supplier in DR Congo at Rwf300, 000, according to Kwizera. The rightful owner, Kwizera said, lives in Kigali where he would also take the drugs from Kamonyi.
To get to Kamonyi, Kwizera said, he was supposed to used Mukamira-Ngororero-Kamonyi road.
CIP Karekezi thanked the responsiveness of those who were quick to share their suspicions with the Police, which facilitated the interception of the trafficker.
"Law enforcement organs are working together to identify all those connected to this trafficking ring, to face justice," he said.
Major drug dealers, under article 263 of the penal code, faces between 20 years and life in prison and a fine of up to Rwf30 million.
