Law enforcement organs have arrested a man in Ruhango District in connection with attempting to offer a bribe to secure the release of his detained relative.
Theogene Bizimungu, 34, was arrested on April 12, in Kinazi sector, Bulima cell giving a bribe of Rwf20, 000.
The person that Bizimungu was trying to unlawfully bail out is detained over genocide ideology.
According to the Southern region Police Spokesperson, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Sylvestre Twajamahoro, the suspect was arrested after he sent money to those handling the case.
"Police was informed that one Bizimungu reached out to those handling the case involving his detained colleague, and seduced them with the bribe," said CIP Twajamahoro.
"Law enforcement organs worked together and Bizimungu was arrested at the venue where he had planned to meet the officer whom he wanted to bribe, and after wiring the money to his mobile account,"
Law N° 54/2018 of 13/08/2018 on fighting against corruption in it’s article 4 stipulates any person who gives, solicits, accepts or receives, by any means, an illegal benefit for himself/ herself or another person or accepts a promise in order to render or omit a service under his or her mandate or uses his or her position to render or omit a service, commits an offence.
Upon conviction, he/she is liable to imprisonment for a term of more than five (5) years but not more than seven (7) years with a fine of three (3) to five (5) times the value of the given or solicited bribe.
