Police seize over 3,300 litres of petroleum products from black market

Rwanda National Police (RNP) has seized 3,030 litres of hydraulic oil and 374 litres diesel from illegal dealers in Gatenga Sector, Kicukiro District in a joint operation conducted on Wednesday, July 13.

The operations against the unlawful trade in inflammables petroleum products was conducted jointly with local leaders and other security organs.

Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Sylvestre Twajamahoro, the Police spokesperson for the City of Kigali said that the inflammables were recovered from 10 dealers in Jua Kali, Ihuriro Villlage, Karambo Cell in Gatenga Sector.

All the 10 illegal dealers are still on the run, CIP Twajamahoro added.

"The operations were in response to the alleged group selling petroleum products in their shops in Jua Kali. In response, 3030 litres of hydraulic oils and 374 litres of diesel were seized, although all the dealers managed to flee," CIP Twajamahoro said.

Article 6 of Law No 85/2013 of 11/9/2013 regulating petroleum and petroleum products trade in Rwanda provides that; any person, who shall perform any type of petroleum and petroleum products trade shall have a license from the competent Authority.

In article 22, the petroleum and petroleum products stores and other places exclusively reserved for the parking of petroleum and petroleum products tankers shall be determined by the competent authority.

CIP Twajamahoro thanked residents, who provided information on the illegal and dangerous business.

He reminded the public that petroleum products such as gasoline, diesel and kerosene are sold at petrol stations not in people?s houses.

"Storing and selling such inflammables in your house or shop is not only unlawful but a high risk to fire... endangering occupants and neighbouring communities," CIP Twajamahoro said.
