Stolen minerals recovered
Police in Kigali have recovered over 50 kilogrammes of cassiterite minerals stolen from Rutongo Mines Company.
The minerals were stolen from the concession in Rulindo District, recently. They were recovered from the suspected thief on March 7, in Jabana Sector Gasabo District
Senior Supt. Emmanuel Hitayezu, the Police spokesperson for the City of Kigali, confirmed said the valuable stones were recovered based on information shared by a commercial motorcyclist.
“A motorcyclist in Jabana was transporting a passenger, but became apprehensive about the passenger’s luggage because it was rather small in size but unusually heavy, which raised his suspicions,” SSP Hitayezu said.
He further explained that the motorcyclist on meeting security personal on their regular patrol, he stopped and requested them to ascertain the contents of luggage carried by the passenger.
“When the suspect was asked to open the sack to verify what he carried, he immediately fled leaving the luggage which contained the minerals behind,” SSP Hitayezu said.
“We have since confirmed the minerals belong to Rutongo Mines Company, who was contacted and collaborated information given earlier in a case filed to police in Rulindo of missing minerals stolen from the mining company warehouses,” he said.
Hitayezu hailed the motorcyclist’s vigilance, and called upon the general public and transporters in particular to always watch out on people that might use them unknowingly to commit crime.
