School accountant arrested over embezzlement
An accountant at Groupe Scolaire Gisenyi in Rubavu District has been arrested for allegedly embezzling over Rwf4 million meant for students feeding and other school development programmes.
Charmant Nkuriyumwami was arrested and detained at Gisenyi Police station on March 12 regarding the investigations on the funds that were not accounted for, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Innocent Gasasira, Police Spokesperson for the western region, said.
Nkuriyumwami is the second person taken into custody over the same case following the arrest of the school headmistress on March 9.
“Investigations and subsequent arrests are based on audits conducted by the district since April last year, which unearthed fraudulent acts through which the money from capitalization funds, parents and students’ feeding funds were embezzled,” CIP Gasasira said.
“The audition carried out revealed that two people were involved in the scam; the headmistress and the accountant, who embezzled a total amount of Rwf4, 366, 993” he added.
“These are acts that undermines and affect national development particularly the education sector at the hands of the same people entrusted with these development responsibilities,” he added.
Investigations are still underway to have a conclusive case report and to arrest anyone that could be connected to this embezzlement case before it’s forwarded to prosecution.
Embezzlement, under article 325, attracts an imprisonment of up to ten years in prison and a fine of two to five times the value of the embezzled or destroyed property
