Police in Nyabihu District is holding two people who were intercepted as they trafficked 420 kilograms of cannabis.

The duo were arrested following a tip-off from a commercial motorcyclist who had been hired for road surveillance as they trafficked the drugs.

According to the Western Region Police Spokesperson, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Innocent Gasasira, said the drugs had been concealed in a Toyota RAV 4 with registration numbers RAD 406G which has since been impounded.

Police identified the suspects as Jeannette Kajeneza 38 and  Jean Bosco Hakizimana 39.

The spokesperson said that after the tip-off from a motorcyclist that drugs were being transported in the mentioned vehicle, Police quickly mounted a road check point to arrest the criminals.

He said that Hakizimana hired a motorcyclist to inform them of any possible police deployment as he communicated with Kajeneza who was in the vehicle driving behind them.

“The same motorcyclist that was carrying Hakizimana is the one that tipped off police and the suspects who were driving from Rubavu to Musanze District were intercepted around Mukamira in Nyabihu District,” said CIP Gasasira.

CIP Gasasira commended the role of the general public in the fight against drugs in the country, and the ongoing efforts to break chains of supply through real time information sharing.

“We hail the motorcyclist who refused to be used as an accomplice to the commissioning of this crime but chose to report the suspects to police,” he added.

The spokesperson observed that the actions of a motorcyclist prove that community policing has bore fruits where the public has been very helpful in coming forward with credible information that leads to stopping crimes before they are committed

The suspects are detained at Mukamira Police station.

“We have mapped major routes and we are working well with the residents to ensure that all those involved in drug related crimes are arrested,” said CIP Gasasira.
