Girl rescued from human traffickers

A 19-year old girl was on Sunday rescued from two suspected human traffickers in Matimba, Nyagatare District.

The suspects were at the time trying to traffic the teenager through a porous in the banks of Akagera River, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Theobald Kanamugire, the Eastern region Police Spokesperson, said.

“The two people, who were trying to traffic the young girl were also arrested and currently detained at Matimba Police station,” CIP Kanamugire said.

“People became suspicious and called the Police after seeing a young girl in company of two men, and attempting to cross to Uganda through and illegal border, and they called the Police,” the spokesperson said.

“It was later established that the girl and the two men were not related and the girl was seduced to believe that she will be taken to Malawi where she was to get a well paying job,” he explained.

He advised youngsters especially girls not to listen to strangers or relatives that try to seduce them with promises abroad.

“When someone tells you that he or she is taking you abroad or anywhere outside your home village, tell relatives, friends, local leaders or security organs; be very sure that where you are going is safe and genuine job. It is through these communications that traffickers will be identified and arrested,” CIP Kanamugire said.

The United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime (UNODC) defines human trafficking as the recruitment, transportation, transfer, harbouring or receipt of persons, by means of the threat or use of force or other forms of coercion, of abduction, of fraud, of deception, of the abuse of power or of position of vulnerability or of the giving or receiving of payments or benefits to achieve the consent of a person having control over another person for the purposes of exploitation.

Exploitation includes prostitution of others or other forms of sexual exploitation, forced labour or services, slavery or practices similar to slavery, servitude or the removal of body organs.
