Rulindo: Five arrested over illegal mining
Five men were taken into custody on Tuesday in Rulindo District after they were found in illegal mining activities.
Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Alex Rugigana, the Police spokesperson for the Northern region, said that the suspects had sneaked into a wolfram concession in Shyorongi Sector where they were arrested red-handed.
He identified the suspects as Eric Ikirizamukwiheba, Jean Claude Twizeyimana, Alphonse Hakizimana, Emmanuel Hakorimana and John Nteziryayo.
“There was information from residents about people that sneak into this specific area either during the day or at night,” CIP Rugigana said.
“On October 9, when residents saw the men entering the concession they called the Police in company of local leaders conducted an operation in a wolfram mining concession owned by ETI Nyakabingo Mining Company where the five men were found stealing minerals. They had already mined about 20 kilogrammes,” he added.
He thanked the residents for being an eye against lawlessness, but warned against such illegal and risky acts.
Most disasters in mining concessions result from illegal mining activities.
