Suspected drug traffickers arrested in Nyabihu

Two suspected drug traffickers were arrested on February 5, in Mukamira Sector of Nyabihu District with combined 3794 pellets of cannabis.

Theogene Harerimana, 30, and Gaudence Murekatete, 40, were taken into custody following credible information provided by residents.

“Residents of Mukamira had reported a ring of drug dealers that traffic them from Rubavu District and distribute to retailers in Nyabihu, Musanze and in the City of Kigali,” Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Innocent Gasasira, the Police spokesperson for the Western region, said.

“On February 5, when residents saw Harerimana boarding a motorcycle with a suspicious luggage, the called the Police in Mukamira, who arrested him; when they checked his luggage, they found it was stashed with 2024 rolls of cannabis,” CIP Gasasira explained.

Residents, he said, tipped the Police on the whereabouts of Murekatete, who was also found with 1770 rolls of cannabis.

The spokesperson thanked the general public for their community policing spirit in fighting crimes and relaying credible information that lead to the arrest of drug traffickers.

The strengthened Police operations and countrywide awareness campaigns against narcotic drugs are aimed at breaking chains of supply.

Under the new penal code, especially in its article 163, anyone convicted for producing, transforming, transporting, storing, giving to another or selling narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances faces a penalty of up to life in prison and a fine of up to Rwf30 million.
