Provisional Driving Licence (PDL)

You need to learn the road code and pass a theoretical test to prove that you understand the road code before driving on the road.

Who can apply for a provisional driving licence?

You must be at least 16 years old before you can apply for your provisional driving licence.

What is the theoretical test?

The theory test is a computer-based or written test that assesses your knowledge of the road code. You will need to get at least 60 marks to pass in order to get a provisional driving licence.

When you feel you are ready, you will need:

  • To apply and pay a fee online via
  • On the day of the test, arrive at the testing centre early. If you are late, you will not be able to sit the test that day
  • To show your identification before being allowed to do the test

What next after the provisional driving test?

If you pass the test
  • Apply for a provisional driving card via
  • A provisional driving card is issued within ten (10) days. You will be notified once it is available
  • Learn to drive
  • You will be allowed to only drive a car in the presence of a supervisor (co-driver)sitting beside you
  • The vehicle must display clearly that it is a learner car (Auto-Ecole markings).
  • if you drive outside your licence conditions, the licence will be revoked or confiscated by the authority entrusted by the powers to do so

If you don't pass the test

You can re-apply for another theory test. You will need to pay for the test again with an application fee as previously done.

Does a provisional driving licence expire?

Yes. Your provisional licence will expire after one (1) years. It can be renewed only once for one (1) year.

You are to renew your provisional driving licence before 15 days of the expiry date.
