HUYE: Police seize 800 litres of illicit brew

About 840 litres of illicit brew have been destroyed in Huye District after they were seized from distillers Simbi Sector, Huye District.

The substances locally known as Muriture were seized on Wednesday, October 20, from three producers in Bwiza Village, Kabasanza Cell in Simbi Sector.

The producers, who were also taken into custody, are identified as Ferdinand Sibomana, 26, Vedaste Mutabaruka, 41 and Jean Paul Bagabo, 28.

The Southern region Police spokesperson, Superintendent of Police (SP) Theobald Kanamugire said that the producers of the illicit brew were reported by the residents.

"Police got information about people, who were producing muriture. Police conducted an operation in the homes of the three identified suspects in Bwiza Village where the 840 litres of illicit brew were recovered and producers taken into custody," SP Kanamugire said.

SP Kanamugire  urged the public against producing, selling and consuming illicit and harmful substances.

The suspects were handed over to RIB at Simbi sector for further investigations.

Article 5 of the Ministerial order N? 001/MoH/2019 of 04/03/2019 establishing the list of narcotic drugs and their categorisation classifies alcoholic drinks produced without complying with standards and other laws; on the list of simple narcotic drugs.

Article 263 of the law determing offences and penalties in general states that; any person who, unlawfully produces, transforms, transports, stores, gives to another or who sells narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances, commits an offence.  
 
Upon conviction, he/she is liable to imprisonment for a term of not less than seven years and not more than ten years and a fine of not less than Frw5 million and less than Frw10 million in regard to "simple narcotics."
