Safe and secure road transport is an important aspect of public health and contributes to economic and social development of a society.
Rwanda National Police (RNP) has, therefore, strengthened its public road safety education in a bid to influence behavioral change on safer road usage to prevent accidents, save lives and property.
This week, awareness and other education programmes were extended to owners and managers of driving schools as well as their instructors; students in primary and secondary schools in different parts of the country, taxi-moto operators, cyclists and pedestrians.

The Minister of Interior, Alfred Gasana joined residents of Rubaya in Gicumbi District for Umuganda. Road safety and fire safety were part of the discussions after Umuganda.
Road safety was also part of the after-Umuganda discussions in some parts of the country.
The awareness focused on pedestrian rights especially respecting and using Zebra Crossing and to encourage pedestrians to always use the left side of the road facing oncoming traffic.
Cyclists were cautioned against holding onto moving vehicles, bad maneuvers, carrying big luggage, and working at night.
Commercial cyclists are required to operate not beyond 6p.m.
Students were also reminded to always use Zebra Crossing where they exist, to look both sides of the road before crossing the road, avoid playing in the middle of the road and to always walk from the left side of the road.
