Fighting GBV and Child Abuse is a responsibility for all - PM Murekezi

The Prime Minister Anastase Murekezi has said that, although the government has put in place several mechanisms to end Gender Based Violence and Child Abuse, there is still need for individual involvement in contributing to the fight.

The Premier made the remarks on October 16 as he officially launched the 2015 National Campaign against Gender Based violence and Child Abuse at an event held in Muhanga District.

“Effects of GBV can go as far as affecting the economy of the country. A victim of psychological or physical violence may not be in position to perform effectively or even contribute to the economy of the country. This could as well be the same case to a child who is abused and tortured,” PM Murekezi said. Read More….

RELOCATING FROM HIGH RISK ZONES IS SAVING LIVES

Last month, the Ministry of Disaster Management and Refugee Affairs launched the National Risk Atlas of Rwanda, which focuses on five main hazards: drought, landslide, flood, earthquake and windstorms. It highlights the elements at risks, the nature of vulnerability and recommendations to mitigate the risks.

The highlands of the Congo-Nile Ridge in the Western, Southern and Northern Provinces are mostly prone to landslide. About 40 percent of the country’s population, according to the atlas, is also exposed to landslide at moderate to very high slope susceptibility. Read More….

Revenue Protection Unit’s response to smuggling and tax evasion

Every year, millions of dollars of revenues are lost due to smuggling activities that evade customs duties.

In order to minimize this challenge, the Revenue Protection Unit RPU) was established to deter, detect, and prevent smuggling, tax evasion and other breaches of revenue laws.

Its establishment was formalized in October 2012 in an agreement signed between Rwanda National Police (RNP) and Rwanda Revenue Authority (RRA), to collaboratively control and manage tax collection in accordance with the law. Read More…

Police, Rayon Sport share spoils to stretch unbeaten run

The Rwanda National Police football club came from behind to force a 1-all draw against Rayon Sports and to stretch the unbeaten run in the Rwanda Azam Premier League.

This was the fifth day of the national league played on Saturday at Kicukiro artificial turf.

Rayon Sport took the lead in the stroke of the first half to break off 1-0.

Police FC came back stronger in the second half, although several attempts to pull back the match produced nothing, at least until the 58thminute. Read More…

Police Handball Club retain ‘Carré d’As Cup’

The 2015 national league handball champions, Police rounded up the season in style after beating APR 35-31 on Saturday to retain the ‘Carré d’As Cup.’

The Carré d’As tournament is played on a round-robin among the top four clubs in the league.

This year’s tourney brought together champions Police as well as APR, Ecole Secondaire Kigoma and College Inyeramihigo, who finished in second, third and fourth place respectively.

Sgt. Albert Sibomana’s Police eased through to the finals after seeing off College Inyemeramihigo of Gisenyi on 51 goals to 33.

The first half ended 11-10 in favour of the law enforcers, and Police maintained the lead even in the second half scoring 24 other goals.

It was Jean Paul Muhawenayo’s memorable evening as he scored 18 individual goals for Police. Read More…

Churches urged to advocate for child rights

Rwanda National Police (RNP) has urged faith-based organizations to advocate for children rights and urge their congregations to fight against child abuse cases such as physical, emotional, sexual abuse and neglect.

The message was delivered on October 13, during a meeting between police officers and 170 members of the Methodist Church of Ruhango District.

Local and church leaders were also present, as well as representatives of a faith based NGO – Compassion International – which caters to the needs of children from poor families in the district. Read More…

Parents urged to protect children from violence

Parents have been urged to protect their children from any form of violence whether physical or psychological.

Assistant Inspector of Police (AIP) Alexandre Minani, the District Community Liaison Officer (DCLO) of Ngororero said this while speaking to about 600 parents, recently.

“Soon students will be breaking off for holidays; they will fully be under you custody, remember there are people out there that lure young girls into sexual intercourse seducing them with their wealth or money. This results to unwanted pregnancies and STDs. Be close and friendly to your children and protect them from such harm,” he said. Read More…

Bugesera: Female police officers discuss gender issues

The director of Gender promotion in Rwanda National Police, Supt. Pelagie Dusabe held discussions with female police officers operating in Bugesera District on October 15 and urged them to be result-oriented and exhibit teamwork with their male counterparts

The meeting aimed at enlightening the female officers on gender related issues including gender equality and find solution to challenges they could be facing in their day-to-day duties.

It is part of the countrywide tour by the gender promotion directorate in RNP, which seeks to enhance the role of female officers in policing, which started on October 5. Read More…

Western sets encounter with PTS in inter-unit final

The Western region has cruised through to the final of the maiden Rwanda National Police (RNP) inter-unit football tournament after overcoming their counterparts of the Eastern region 2-1 in the second semi finals played on Friday at Kicukiro artificial turf.

The arguably talented player of the tournament, Police Constable Vincent Nkanika bagged the brace for the Western region to seal the final encounter against Police Training School (PTS) Gishari, which eliminated Police Band in the one-sided 3-0 win in the last week’s first semi-final.

Nkanika scored the first goal just two minutes into the match, before the Eastern region brought the match back to square three minutes later.

With just five minutes to the final whistle, the talisman doubled his score to make it 2-1. Read More…

Police reconciles 10 families with domestic disputes

Rwanda National Police (RNP) has continued its initiative to reconcile troubled families, as part of its initiative to foster peace and security in neighborhoods with a view to preventing domestic conflicts and resulting g crimes.

 On October 8, police counselors reached out to ten families in Gahara Sector, Kirehe District and endeavored to reconcile spouses who had suffered domestic deputes, which concerned their neighbors that they might escalate into crime.

Kamonyi motorcyclists in road safety awareness

Motorcycle taxi operators in Kamonyi District have pledged to partner with Rwanda National Police (RNP) in ensuring road safety and adherence to traffic rules and regulations.

 The commitment was made during a meeting held on October 13, where over 200 commercial motorcyclists in the district met with police officers and local leaders in a bid to foster partnership in curbing accidents caused by recklessness.

 During the meeting, the District Police Commander (DPC) of Kamonyi, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Marcel Kalisa, noted that commercial motorcyclists need to give priority to their safety and that of their passengers, by observing traffic laws at all times.

RNP takes awareness against human trafficking to Ngororero students

Rwanda National Police on October 13 engaged about 400 students ETO Gatumba in Ngororero District in a discussion to enlighten them about human trafficking and the tricks traffickers use to lure them into this modern-day slavery and ordeal involved.

The students were also told that youth are the main target by traffickers and urged to be on the lookout for anyone who may be offering them jobs abroad or promising a better life far away from home. Read More…

Pupils in Nyarugenge tipped on dangers of drug abuse

The Director of Anti-Narcotics Unit at Rwanda National Police (RNP), Superintendent Christophe Semuhungu called on Rwandan youths and students to desist from abusing drugs and concentrate on constructive activities that build their future and nation.

Supt. Semuhungu delivered the message on October 16 while addressing hundreds of pupils of Intwari Primary school in Nyarugenge District, who converged in Rwezamenyo Sector.

He strongly urged the students to report any drug dealers who target young people. Read More…
