Some 80 nursery and primary pupils from Wise and Smart School in Musanze District, on Monday, December 15, visited the Rwanda National Police (RNP) General Headquarters in Kacyiru to learn more about police work and community safety.
The students accompanied by 20 teachers, gained firsthand insight into the operations of various police units, including the Fire and Rescue Brigade (FRB) and the Canine Brigade, enhancing their understanding of the role these units play in public safety and security.
They learned about fire risk prevention and observed modern firefighting methods, including the use of fire engines in emergencies.
The pupils also gained insight into the role of police service dogs in search operations and the detection of narcotics, explosives, and other hazardous materials.

The RNP spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Boniface Rutikanga, highlighted that visits like these are vital for enhancing community understanding and building strong relationships, particularly with children, to promote trust and cooperation between law enforcement and public.
“When young people visit the Police, it provides us with a valuable opportunity to educate them, showcase the Police work, and, above all, strengthen the relationships between the police and the communities we serve, which is the foundation of sustainable security,” ACP Rutikanga said.
He further highlighted the benefits of involving both students and teachers in such proactive engagements.
“Teachers interact with many people, and the knowledge they acquire often becomes a guiding principle they share with others. Having them as ambassadors in their communities and schools yields long-term positive results. Students also learn quickly and share what they gain with peers at school, within their communities, and with their families,” he added.

Wise and Smart School headteacher, Elysee Ndayishimiye, expressed gratitude to the RNP leadership for providing the educational opportunity.
“We appreciate the Rwanda National Police for this visit, which allowed our students to understand the operations of different police units. Beyond gaining knowledge, it also provides a platform to showcase our country’s progress and instill a sense of patriotism, helping them grow into responsible citizens,” Ndayishimiye said.
He noted that the visit was equally beneficial for teachers.
“We gained valuable insights that we will share with others. For children, such exposure helps them understand the importance of education, set goals, and develop aspirations. This visit has also strengthened their confidence and admiration for a national institution like the police,” he added.
